Guidance Officers are employed by the Department of Education to assist students and their families to achieve their best outcomes. Guidance Officers are registered teachers with post-graduate qualifications in mental health and counselling.
Guidance Officers can help students in several different areas:
- personal: friends, family, personal relationships.
- health: supporting mental health and providing referrals for young people with ongoing mental health concerns. Discussing health body and mind practises with students.
- academic: subject selection, applying for tertiary courses, improving study skills, managing time, exam preparation and career pathways.
- work: characteristics of jobs, opportunities available, developing a suitable career path, applying for jobs, discussing suitable apprenticeships and traineeships.

Sessions with the Guidance Officer are confidential unless the information received meets mandatory reporting requirements.
